[Review] Bodywash (& Shampoo) for Babies

With a family history of grandparents passing away from cancer and my aunt surviving end stage lung cancer many years ago, my family has been constantly discussing about carcinogens (cancer causing substances) around us. Many foreign looking chemical names will pop up in the ingredient list and it is extremely scary to know that these chemicals are in most of our everyday items like body wash and shampoo.

Adding on to the fact that we have eczema (it can be hereditary), my quest for skincare products suitable for my children became quite an obsession since 2007 when my first child was born.

What do I look out for?
– Organic if possible, better if certified by a well-known organisation
– Made using natural ingredients
– Does not contain known carcinogens (chemicals/substances which cause cancer)

How did I narrow down to these 5?
– Relative & friends’ recommendations
– Quick search online for reviews

Well, as with all products, we will have personal preferences in terms of gel or cream type, fragrance, after-feel, etc. This is a simple comparison with personal views after using it on my 3 children: 8 years old boy, 4 years old boy and 3 month old girl.

1-Skincare Review Audrey Wong3

After trying out all 5 brands and taking price into consideration as we have 3 kids, raising kids ain’t cheap, I will stick back to Baby Oh Baby by Rainbow Research for the time being. We have been using this for the past 4 years for the boys. I bought the others to try in hope of finding something better for Meimei.

Hopefully something more pocket friendly pops up along the way and we can do a review again.

Baby Oh Baby Herbal Body Wash (Scented) by Rainbow Research

Product Details Comments
  • Hypoallergenic
  • No Tears
  • Cruelty Free

Baby Oh Baby Scented Shampoo gently cleans scalp and hair using Herbal Extracts* of Calendula (Marigold), Chamomile, and Lemon Grass. The soft natural scent is derived from an essential oil blend of Lavender, Chamomile, and Orange. Moisturizes, detangles, and adds shine.

I’m attracted to the herbal extracts.

Always loved natural essential oils and these herbal extracts and essential oil blend in the product makes me feel happy using it.

Suggested Use

Place a small amount in palm and gently massage into wet hair. Rinse with warm water, gently dry, and comb.

This is a BODY WASH, but the suggested use is more for HAIR?

Could be a typo error or it could actually be used as a shampoo too.

Other Ingredients

Purified water; decyl glucoside (corn); coco betaine (coconut); sorbitol; olive oil carboxylate; glucose; tocopherol (vitamin E); retinyl palmitate (vitamin A); oat amino acids; organic extracts of calendula (marigold), chamomile, and lemon grass; phenoxytol (green tea); essential oils of lavender, chamomile, and orange; grapefruit seed extract.

Made with Herbal Extracts*

  • Hypoallergenic
  • No artificial color or animal ingredients
No scary unknown chemicals here.

All chemical name comes with stated natural source. E.g. Corn for decyl glucoside.

Short and simple list of ingredients. I like this as products shouldn’t be too complicated. Simple and natural is always best.

Price: SGD$10.54 (excluding shipping) from iHerb.com for 16oz bottle

Hugo Naturals Baby Shampoo & Baby Wash (Tear-Free) – Chamomile & Vanilla

Keep baby clean from head to toe with our shampoo & baby wash. Gentle enough for a newborn, our rich lathering shampoo and wash is formulated to gently cleanse baby’s delicate skin without drying. Enriched with vitamin E and shea butter to help keep baby’s skin soft and healthy.

I’m attracted to this product because it claims to be gentle for newborns.
Suggested Use

Apply to wet hair and skin. Work into lather. Rinse. Gentle enough for every day use.

Generic suggested use.
Other Ingredients

Aqua/purified water, lauryl glucoside, decyl glucoside, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine, glycerin, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, sodium cocoa butter amphoacetate, tocopherol, allantoin, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract, calendula officinalis flower extract, arnica montana flower extract, althaea officinalis root extract, symphytum officinale leaf extract, caprylic/capric triglyceride, vanilla planifolia fruit extract, coffea arabica (coffee) seed extract, myroxylon pereirae (balsam peru) oil, cocos nucifera (coconut) fruit extract, pyrus malus (apple) fruit extract, prunus armeniaca (apricot) fruit extract, chamomilla recutita (maticaria) flower oil, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf oil, lonicera caprifolium (honeysuckle) flower extract, lonicera japonica (honeysuckle) flower extract, caprylhydroxamic acid, caprylyl glycol.

Never any: Parabens, phenoxyethanol, SLS, PEG’s, propylene glycol, petroleum products, artificial color or artificial fragrances.

Gluten and soy-free. Vegan.

Several ingredients are highlighted in red.

Reason being they are ‘scary’ chemical names with no mentioned sources. Are they natural? Are they naturally derived? What effects do they have on the skin?

The list of ingredients is too complicated for comfort.

No animal testing.

Great news for animal lovers like myself and my family!

Price: SGD$12.15 (excluding shipping) from iHerb.com for 8oz bottle

Gentle Tear-Free Shampoo & Body Wash

Babies love bath time – soft bubbles, warm water and a parent’s tender care. Gently wash baby’s delicate skin and hair with our natural, sulfate-free, foaming cleanser for daily, head to toe bath care. This soothing tear-free formula is enriched with organic sunflower oil and organic chamomile for shiny, healthy hair and a clean, happy baby.

Check out NSF for more information.

I love that they confidently state the percentage of the product which is made up of organic ingredients!

No synthetic fragrances! Yay!

No phthalates, harsh sulfates or parabens! Yay again!

Tear-free is great as my second son often complains that his eyes are painful during shower.

Suggested Use

Apply a small amount of gel to damp palm or cloth. Work into creamy lather over baby’s damp skin and hair, then gently rinse. Or pour a small amount into running water for a bubbly bath.

Great that they mentioned bubbly bath as my elder 2 boys love the bath tub!

Caution: For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. Keep out of reach of children.

No animal testing.

Stated that it is tear-free but in the warnings we are to avoid contact with eyes.

It could be a normal precautionary warning but it gets me thinking: So really tear-free or not?

Great for animal lovers again!

Aloe barbadensis leaf juice(¹), aqua (water), sodium coco-sulfate, decyl glucoside, sodium chloride, glycerin, lauryl lactyl lactate, arnica montana flower extract(¹), avena sativa (oat) bran(¹), calendula officinalis flower extract(¹), camellia sinensis leaf extract(¹), chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract(¹), lavandula angustifolia (lavender) flower extract(¹), citrus aurantium dulcis (orange) peel oil, citrus bergamia (bergamot) fruit oil, citurs limon (lemon) peel oil, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil(¹), beta-glucan(¹), citric acid, sodium sulfate, alcohol(¹), potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, limonene.

(¹) Certified Organic Ingredient.

Product is preserved with sodium benzoate.

Contains 70% organic content

No parabens, harsh preservatives, synthetic colors or fragrances, phthalates, sodium laruyl or laureth sulfate. 100% vegetarian ingredients. EU Cosmetics Directive Compliant.

As you can see, quite a few ingredients have been highlighted in red.

Some are food preservatives like sodium benzoate & potassium sorbate. However, the rest are ‘suspicious’ as they are not commonly known chemicals.

Are they really safe? Add onto the above warning, I’m quite wary of using this product.

Aveeno Baby Wash & Shampoo – Lighted Scented

Product Details Comments
  • New Size
  • Pediatrician Recommended
  • Natural Oat Formula
  • Tear-Free
  • Gentle Cleansing for Hair & Body

Wash & Shampoo contains natural oat extract blended into a rich lathering cleanser that cleans without drying because it is soap-free and hypoallergenic. This tear-free formula can be used on skin and hair for gentle cleansing that rinses clean with a soft, fresh fragrance. Aveeno Baby Wash & Shampoo is formulated to be gentle enough for newborns and babies with sensitive skin.

Aveeno can be used every day to help keep your baby’s skin and hair soft, smooth and feeling healthier.

The Aveeno brand has been Pediatrician recommended for over 60 years.

Discover nature’s secret for baby’s healthy skin.

Tear-Free again! Yay!

I’m attracted to the ‘soap-free’ as it means it will be gentle on sensitive or eczema prone skin.

Suggested Use

Twist off cap, remove quality seal. Do not use if seal is broken. Pour onto a wet wash cloth or hand and apply to hair and body. Or pour directly into bath water. Lather and rinse.

Again, the mention of using in bath water is great for my boys who love the bath tub.
Other Ingredients

Water, cocamidopropyl betaine, peg-80 sorbitan laurate, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium chloride, peg-150 distearate, sodium benzoate, tetrasodium EDTA, fragrance, polyquaternium-10, butylene glycol, avena sativa (oat) kernel extract. May also contain citric acid.

Short and simple like of ingredients.

However, too many chemical names which are blaring at me.

There is already added FRAGRANCE in the product which is not recommended for sensitive and eczema prone skin.

SLS ALERT!!! Sodium Laureth Sulfate is SLS, and there was a rumour going around that it causes cancer. There are organisations which have officially stated SLS is not carcinogenic but it does cause skin irritation for some.

This is one reason why I would prefer it to be ABSENT in the skin care products I use for my children.

Safety tip: Keep this product out of reach of children.

Great general safety tip!

Price: SGD$16.69 (excluding shipping) from iHerb.com for 18oz bottle Also available locally at Mom’s Essentials SGD$31.90 for 18oz bottle

Nature’s Baby Organics Shampoo & Body Wash – Vanilla Tangerine

Product Details Comments
  • Leaves Hair Soft & Luxurious
  • Free of SLS, Parabens, Glutens
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Free Propylene Glycol
  • Member Organic Trade Association

Nature’s Baby Organics is not just a business, it is a labor of love. Developed by a mother whose concern for her children resulted in a pure and natural line of personal care products with no compromises. Any product that we make contains 70% organic ingredients, at a minimum. Gentle enough for babies, yet beneficial for older children, and even mom and dad.

Nature’s Baby Organics – Formulated by Mother Nature.

Made with the highest quality botanicals, essential oils, and luxurious moisturizers to pamper your baby’s tender hair and skin without drying.

Another product which confidently states the percentage of organic ingredients.

And definitely, being free of SLS and parabens are pull factors for me.

Suggested Use

Rinse hair with warm water. Apply to skin and/or hair using your hand or a washcloth. Lather and rinse. Follow with Nature’s Baby Organics Moisturizing Conditioner. To maintain product quality, avoid getting bath or shower water in the product.

Great for showers & bath time.
Other Ingredients

Organic Ingredients: Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, cucumis sativus, (cucumber) fruit extract, chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract, calendula officinalis flower extract, vanilla plantifolia fruit extract.

Additional Ingredients: Decyl glucoside (coconut & palm kernel derived), cocamidopropyl betaine (coconut derived), disodium cocoamphodiacetate (coconut derived), disodium cocoyl glutamate (coconut derived), hydrolyzed wheat protein (wheat, gluten free), dimethyl lauramine oleate (safflower seed oil derived), sodium lauroyl oat amino acids (oat protein), butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), carthamus tinctorius (safflower) seed oil, panthenol (pro vitamin B-5), tocopherol (natural vitamin E), capryloyl glycine (amino acid), glycine (amino acid), citric acid (natural pH adjuster), gluconolactone (and) sodium benzoate (NSF approved preservative), vanilla planifolia (vanilla), citrus tangerina (tangerine) oil

Free of parabens, SLS & propylene glycol.

I like the way they listed the organic ingredients separately so I can quickly identify the organic ingredients.

Again, too many ‘scary’ chemical names, but at least the natural sources are stated clearly.

As mentioned earlier, sodium benzoate is a common food preservative, but this is the first time I’m seeing ‘gluconolactone’. Fear of the ‘unknown’ sets in and this lowers my impression of the product.

As with all bath items, please test on a small area of skin if known to have skin allergies.

Keep out of reach of children.

Yes, with all bath items, we need to test on a small area. Even if it is made of all natural ingredients!

Price: SGD$18.95 (excluding shipping) from iHerb.com for 16oz bottle

I have been using Rainbow Research for the past six years for all three boys. They smell so good that their infant care and childcare teachers have come to ask me for the brand of shower wash I use! =)
